Dwarves: The Natural Choice For An Army Painting Sprint

The last meaningful work I did on my Warmaster Dwarves was seven years ago (nearly to the day). I'd been humming and hawing about a Warmaster army for awhile now, and settled on the Dwarves when I got back from Scotland a few weeks ago. Since then I've finished the silver and gold, and laid down the first layer for the wood. I have no idea if I'll get these to a usable state before Fall In! in November, but I'm trying.

Boys’ Club, Short Film, Review And Interview

Boys' Club is an irreverent and funny Story of two young men trapped in a bunker after the apocalypse. The audience's reaction to the story was a mix of OMG and laughter. The premise starts in the synopsis and delivered on the punch line.

I saw Boys' Club at the 2019 FilmQuest film festival (website). It was nominated for Best Student Short.

I would recommend this for adults who are alright with what is shared below and are able to see the humor in the situation.

Synopsis

A deteriorating sex addict spots a sex doll outside of his underground apocalypse bunker.

Boys' Club was written and directed by Troy Dewinne. Here he shares his inspiration for this movie and what he is working along. He also talks why he became a filmmaker and other things he likes.

What was the inspiration for Boys' Club?

It was a simple question at first:

How can I make masturbation integral to the plot without losing the audience to a slapstick comedy headspace?

Once I figured out the post apocalypse setting and found a real Cold War bunker I could use, the rest was (deleted from my browser) history.

What project(s) do you have coming up you're excited about?

I'm currently in the finalizing stages for Gobble, an animated television series about two goblins trying to become the realm's first goblin pop musicians. There are no sex dolls (so far), but still heavily a dark comedy with a lot of fantasy-like drugs. Look out for Gobble next year as we have a pitch bible, script, and proof of concept that will be going through the film festival circuit!

What was your early inspiration for pursuing a career in film?

Way back in high school my friend Ethan Dirks and I made these poor quality YouTube parodies. They were terrible, but were getting decent views for the time (20,000–150,000). My biggest revelation was after uploading a parody video for Friday by Rebecca Black, Rooster Teeth uploaded a parody video months later with the same exact premise...and it was terrible!

Made me think: We came up with an idea before an actual film company and we did a better job!

Definitely started the ball rolling for my inevitable film career.

What would be your dream project?

Hyperion by Dan Simmons is my favorite novel bar none. If I was able to direct an adaptation of that book, either feature or television series that would 100% be my dream project.

What are some of your favorite pastimes when not working on a movie?

I've been making really dumb music with my friends as a pass time for a few years now. We hang out, improv some lyrics and chords, and then search through the muck for some semblance of a song. Sometimes it works, most times it doesn't. Always fun!

What is one of your favorite movies and why?

Chungking Express directed by Wong Kar-wai. That film had me sitting in my car for an hour trying to comprehend it. The crazy thing: Chungking Expressisn't a hard film to understand, it's how the director represented the story (cinematography, acting, sound design, editing, everything!) that just floored me when I first saw it. Highly recommend. So weird, but SO GOOD!

ASOIAF: Tywin Lannister 40Pt Army

My point exactly.

In my previous article, I gave you guys the rundown for how I go about building army lists.  I always start with the Commander first and then try to take units that best take advantage of their tactics cards.  Well, I decided to get the party started with my favorite character from GoT:  Tywin Lannister.  Lannisters, in general, have a ton of control elements and I think Tywin just adds to the flavor in a big way.  He is a battlefield commander so that means you put him with your frontline troops in any one of the units that he can be taken in.  Since he's considered an infantry character, you have to put him in one of your infantry units.  I decided to put Tywin inside a unit of Mountain Men because they have a pretty respectable save of 4+.  Besides, having two chances to apply Panic-based damage is great.  More on this later.

For now, let's take a look at Tywin himself and his Tactics cards to see what he offers us:

Just look at this badass.

From the get-go, you can see that Tywin is all about making your opponents' units Weakened and then exploiting those tokens and effects to your advantage.  Immediately, you can see that Tywin's Commander card has built-in Lannister Supremacy and Fear of the Lion.  Fear of the Lion combos really nicely with Tywin's tactics cards because it allows him to place a free Weaken token on any enemy unit within Long Range of his unit when he activates.  I put him with Mountain Men because MMs already have built-in Vicious so on the offense, they can make opponents take Panic Tests with a -2 modifier.  When they attack back, Tywin's Lannister Supremacy makes it so if I roll a 7+ on my Panic test, my opponent has to take another test at -2 again.  This is some pretty silly free damage if my opponent rolls poorly and can also be a form of damage negation because the more models they lose to Panic checks, the less damage they will do because of the ranks lost.  Throw Weaken on top of this from Tywin and it becomes a force multiplier.

The Lion doesn't mess around.

The Tactics cards themselves are very nasty. Exploit Weakness is a perfect example of a card that kicks your opponent when they're down.  If you spend the Weaken token, you can force your opponent re-roll all of their successful hits and any 1s to pop up will deal automatic wounds to their unit on top of whiffing on their attacks.  This is extremely effective at taking down heavy cavalry because it essentially turns that units attack into wounds that bypass saves.  The Lion's Wrath is a great card because it affects ALL enemy units on the board that has Weaken on them and it lasts until the end of the round.  You will hear me say this a lot, but anything that lasts an entire round is super good.  Players take alternating turns activating their units, but rounds last after all player turns are finished.  This means that for the duration of the round, anything Weakened on the battlefield will be moving -1 movement AND suffering Disorderly Charge on a roll of 1-2.  First, this card auto-applies a Weaken effect anywhere on the board, but Disorderly Charge is super frustrating when it happens.  Another example of Lannisters kicking you while you're down, but Disorderly Charge robs you from your ability to re-roll hits on a Charge AND essentially silences you for the rest of that unit's turn.  Players cannot play Tactics cards for the remainder of that unit's action, and if you miss the actual charge itself, that unit has to take a Panic test.  Lastly, we have Lannister Intimidation.  This is pretty much a hard silence on the enemy unit and all of its attachments until the end of the round.  Again, end of the round here folks, Tywin doesn't F around.  Almost everything he does is centered around making your opponents' units weaker while giving slightly leveraging your battlefield position.

Pycelle is an auto-include with Tywin.

As for unit selection, there are quite a few things you can do and I think Tywin is one of the more flexible commanders for how you want to build the list.  To make things a little easier, let me first start off by saying that you should probably take Pycelle as your first NCU.  Pycelle is incredible with Tywin because he puts Weaken tokens on your opponents when he claims a zone.  This is exactly what Tywin needs when playing his Tactics cards and Pycelle on the Tactics zone after The Lion's Wrath will see 3 enemy units Weakend on a single turn.  Now, Varys is pretty much one of the best NCUs in the game IMO.  His ability is incredibly good even if you only have a limited amount of Order tokens.  The ability to stop a crucial game-altering tactics board play or NCU ability from triggering when claiming a zone can be huge.  Since Lannisters is a control-heavy faction in general, you will see me playing Varys a lot in my lists.

Alright, enough talk, here's the list:

Faction: House Lannister
Commander: Tywin Lannister – Lord of Casterly Rock
Points: 40 (4 Neutral)

Combat Units:
• Lannister Guardsmen (5)
  with Assault Veteran (1)
• House Clegane Mountain Men (6)
with Tywin Lannister – Lord of Casterly Rock (0)
• House Clegane Mountain Men (6)
  with Assault Veteran (1)
• Lannister Crossbowmen (6)
• Knights of Casterly Rock (8)

Non-Combat Units:
• Pycelle – Grand Maester (3)
• Lord Varys – The Spider (4)

Made with ASOIAFBuilder.com

As you can see, I have quite a bit of diversity in there with 7 total activations (5 combat and 2 NCUs).  Combat activations matter for deployment, but total activations matter for how much control you have over the board state.  That will be its own article at another time, but this isn't the first time I've played a minis game where activation and unit activation order matters a lot.  Anyways, let's take a look at the rest of the list I have here:  You will see Guardsman with Assault Vet, Tywin in MM and another unit of MM because they're a rock-solid unit.  Assault Veterans because I love the aggression and they are great with Tywin because Weaken basically ensures that there will be a second round of combat and your guys will attrition quite well.  For the Guardsman, you can also choose to bring along a Guard Captain to auto-pass Panic and therefore guarantees Lannister Supremacy every time.

When it comes to rounding out the rest of the army, Crossbowmen are there so they can pick off enemy units from range.  From here, you can generally branch into any direction you want to bring for the meta.  You can take another unit of Lannister Guards, another unit of MM, but for diversity and the ability to harass objectives, I decided to go with Xbows.  If you think about it, if you're running a pretty aggressive infantry army, having 7 shots of Sundering from Long Range that hits on 3s is no joke.  On top of that, I've decided to go wih a unit of Knights of Casterly Rock because they're a pretty decent unit to have for the points.  Some people don't like them because you need to play them well and they're not push and win like the Flayed Men, but if you get them on the flank of a combat you need to win, you will like them a lot.  They're designed to win on the charge so if you're not destroying units on the charge, think about saving them until you do or else you'll have to waste turns (or Manuever on the Tactics Board) to set them up again.

Stay tuned for my next article where I cover one of my favorite Stark lists to play right now!

IESF Announces First Three Titles For 12Th World Championships

Israeli eSports Association officials with Amanda Pakade (MSSA President) and Johan van Breda (Protea Team Manager) shortly after the annoucement that IESF's 12th World Championships is to be held in Israel.
Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) has been advised that IESF has announced that eFootball (PES), Tekken 7 and DOTA 2 shall bee played at IESF's 12th World Championship to be held in Eilat, Israel, in November 2020.

Konami's eFootball Pro Evolution Soccer (eFootball PES) will return for its second year as an official game title at IESF's World Championship. With its long history of international appeal, eFootball is a natural choice for international Esports competitions. Blake Govender (Oakhill School) ably represented South Africa in 2019, and it will be interesting to see if he can maintain his position in the team.

BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment's Tekken 7 shall once again be held at IESF's World Championship. The popular 1:1 fighting game was first released in 1994. South Africa has always had a representattive in this title since its introduction in IESF's events in 2011. In 2019 Charlize Seremak (HTS Sasolburg) represented South Africa.

DOTA 2, being one of the most popular esports titles in recent years. Although the title was won by Sweden in IESF's 11th World Championship in Seoul, South Africa put in a fine performance.

IESF President, Colin Webster, stated, "It would be an honour to have the defending world champions for Tekken 7 and DotA 2 attend IESF's 12th World Championships. IESF's 12th World Championships to be held in Eilat in November 2020 promises to be the most well produced world championships ever. Without doubt, such World Championships is the jewel in the crown."

Colin then added, "Special thanks must be extended to the publishers of the titles for the use of such titles. Without the continued support of the publishers, esports would not be the most vibrant sport in the world."

Amanda Kwaza, MSSA President, has already committed South Africa to be fully represented at IESF's 12th World Championships. Also read:

So Much Terrain!

I have been working fairly consistently on terrain the last couple of weeks in my limited hobby painting time. The results are a fair bit of work done on Frostgrave terrain and a few random pieces as well. That would, of course, include finishing up those minefields for Team Yankee that I showed off a few posts back.

So here are a few photos of what I have managed to accomplish:

These are supposed to be bases but I thought they would look good as ruined scatter terrain.

An experiment in bamboo stands and some additional small trees.
I should do a few trees up as Frostgrave bushes I think.

The largest piece of Frostgrave terrain I have. It gives a bit of a third dimension to
the battlefield, which it desperately needs. I need a tower, too.

A harmless statue, or a devastating golem?

Another statue? And yet another ruined wall... are there no buildings still standing?

More tombstones (I think I will sell some on eBay)
Also, a trio of beer barrels. Because beer.

Buds, Blooms, And Thorns Review Of La Viña By Devir Games

Buds, Blooms, and Thorns Review of La Viña by Devir Games
DisclaimerSupport me on Patreon!
Vitals:
Title: La Viña
Designed by: Jose Ramón Palacios
Publisher: Devir Games
MSRP: $25
2-5p | 30-45 min | 8+

Introduction:
A very old viticulturist has passed on to a better place. When his heirs meet at his house, the question of who will become the new owner of the vineyard is brought up. The jewel of all the old man's property is this small plot of vines, producing grapes of the highest quality, which has sadly fallen into neglect. The various types of grapevines have overgrown the area without any care or supervision. The deceased owner left a will stating that he wanted the vineyard to be brought back to its former glory. In order to avoid splitting up the plot, he declared that the vineyard would be granted to whomever is able to obtain the best yield from it. The grape harvest has just started, and there are many wineries that have offered a good price for the grapes they need.

Taking turns, each player will move his grape picker down the aisle between the vines on the trellises. The player looks at the grape cards and chooses which one he wants to collect, then puts it into one of his baskets. When he comes out of the vineyard at the end of the aisle, the grape picker can deliver the grapes in his baskets to the wineries, so long as he has collected the minimum quantity they require. He then receives the reward that the wineries offer. When a player carries out his last delivery, the game ends. The rest of the players continue to play until they come to the end of the aisle for the last time. The one who has obtained the most prestige is then declared the winner.

—description from the publisher

Blooms:
Blooms are the game's highlights and features.  Elements that are exceptional.
  • Outstanding presentation, artwork, and component quality.  I especially love the prestige tokens.
  • I love the mechanic that allows you to move as far forward along the path as you like, but the person at the back moves first.
  • Great balance between gaining resources (grapes) and racing to the end in order to sell for points.
  • I like how the barrels are used to count down to the end of the game, with the last player to sell at a particular winery gaining a bonus and the game ending once someone places their last barrel. It's a nice blend of racing to end the game and timing your sales for maximum benefit.
Buds:
Buds are interesting parts of the game I would like to explore more.
  • A lot of different Grape and Winery cards mean there will be a different mix every game, making each game play differently.
  • The game scales great from 2 to 5 players, with some minor changes for 2 players (each player controls two workers).
Thorns:
Thorns are a game's shortcomings and any issues I feel are noteworthy.
  • The rulebook is pretty poorly translated.  There are a few areas where the description of gameplay is not as clear as it could be and a few other areas where things are missing or just left unexplained.  It took watching the gameplay video and reading forum comments to make sure we had all the rules correct.
  • The basket upgrades felt very unbalanced.  I thought it was a translation error at first, so my second game we played a little different, but then later I learned that the unbalanced feeling rule is correct.
  • Not much gameplay arc.  There's no sense of growth in the game; what you do in the first round is pretty much what you do in the last round, and it feels like it takes too long to get to the end because of this.
Final Thoughts:
There are some things that La Viña does great - incorporating the theme, balancing resource gathering versus racing to sell, etc.  However, there are some areas where La Viña just doesn't quite hit the mark.  The rulebook leaves a lot unclear, and there's not much game arc, however the biggest issue is that the basket upgrades feels very unbalanced.

There are always fewer upgrades available than players and there's no rule against upgrading from a small bucket to the large bin, skipping over the medium basket.  The first time I played we thought this was wrong, so the second time we said you could only upgrade one step at a time.  So you couldn't upgrade your starting 2 card bucket straight to a 4 card bin.  You'd first have to upgrade it to a 3 card basket.  You could upgrade your 3 card basket at the start to a 4 card bin, but then risk getting stuck with a 2 card bucket that can't be upgraded because all the 3 card baskets are taken.  That change felt a lot more balanced.  But then, after watching a gameplay video with the publisher, I saw that it was allowed to upgrade directly from the small basket to the large bin.  It seems like an obvious move to shoot for in the first round, which isn't too hard since the difference is only 7 prestige, and that means the player(s) finishing last have no shot at getting that upgrade.  That feels wrong and unbalanced, but I guess that's correct.

La Viña is very close to being a Bloom game for me.  I think for what it does though, Parks from Keymaster Games scratches the same itch and does it a bit better.  If I hadn't played Parks, I probably would have enjoyed La Viña more.  But the unbalanced feel of the basket upgrades, the poorly translated rulebook, and lack of any game arc are enough to knock it down to a Bud.  It is quite a bit cheaper than Parks though, so if you want this style of game, La Viña is a great affordable alternative.  For me though, since I have both games, I'd choose to play Parks over La Viña pretty much every time.

Buds, Blooms, and Thorns Rating:
Bud!  This game definitely has some
great moments.  It's good for several plays
and should appeal to most gamers, especially
if you enjoy other games like this.
